RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
