The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
